RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University women's cross-country student-athletes Jane Burgoyne (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock), Valentina Gonzalez (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) and Shayla Morales (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) have been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Fall 2019 All-Academic Team, the CACC recently announced.
Gonzalez earns the award for the third occasion, the maximum possible in one sport. Burgoyne is a second-time honoree and Morales a first-time winner.
In order to be named to the CACC All-Academic Team, recipients must have used a season of eligibility while participating in a CACC fall championship sport, be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, be a second-year student-athlete at their current school and have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher at the end of the immediate preceding term.
Burgoyne, a senior and the team's captain, is in her third year with the Golden Falcons after transferring from Moravian College. She ran in all seven of Felician's meets this season. Burgoyne was the team's fifth scorer in both the CACC Championship meet on Oct. 27, finishing 17th of 87, and the NCAA Division II East Regional, placing 86th of 162. She is a 2016 graduate of Glen Rock High, and carries a 3.72 GPA as an English major.
Gonzalez, a senior, was one of five three-time honorees conference-wide. She ran in four races for the Golden Falcons this year. Her season-best 5,000-meter time of 24:21 came at the NJIT Technology Challenge on Oct. 5, while her 6K low was 30:23 on Sept. 21 at the NJAIAW Championshp. Gonzalez is a 2016 graduate of Wood-Ridge High. She owns a 3.76 GPA as a double major in communications and mathematics.
Morales, a sophomore, burst onto the CACC scene last year as the league's Rookie of the Year. This season, she broke her own school 5K record by running at 18:40 at NJIT before finishing second in the CACC Championship race (20:14 for 5K) and 31st at regionals (23:52 for 6K). She has 3.75 GPA while majoring in social & behavioral sciences.
All three honorees are also members of Felician's track & field team. Five Golden Falcon student-athletes have now earned CACC All-Academic honors during the 2019-20 academic year.
Felician finished second as a team in the CACC Championship meet out of 12 complete teams and seventh of 23 at regionals, the latter a school record.
League-wide, Burgoyne, Gonzalez and Morales were three of 29 student-athletes to be honored in women's cross-country from the 14 member schools. The complete 2019 CACC Women's Cross-Country All-Academic Team can be viewed at https://www.caccathletics.org/sports/xc/2019-20/releases/117WAcad.
