Felician Sweeps CACC Weekly Women's Cross-Country Honors

Women's Cross-Country Weekly Awards for Oct. 15, 2019

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University claimed both Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference weekly women's cross-country awards for the period ending Oct. 13, the CACC announced on Tuesday. Felician sophomore Shayla Morales (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) was chosen the conference's Runner of the Week and Golden Falcon freshman Ashley Linares (Passaic, N.J./Paramus Catholic) was named the week's top Rookie.

Both athletes were honored for their performance during the Jack Saint Clair Memorial Invitational, hosted by the Jefferson Rams at Belmont Plateau on Oct. 12. Morales set the Felician course record for 6,000 meters and ran the sixth-fastest 6K time overall in Felician history, finishing in 24 minutes, 10 seconds. She placed fourth out of 122 runners.

Linares was fifth overall in 24:19. Her time ranks No. 7 overall for 6,000 meters in Golden Falcon annals.

Morales was the 2018 CACC Rookie of the Year and has emerged as Felician's frontrunner once again in the Golden Falcons' last two races. Linares led the Golden Falcons in the season-opening Philadelphia Metropolitan Championship, a 5K event at Belmont Plateau, and has been among the team's top three finishers in each race.

Felician entered Saturday as the No. 10 team in the NCAA Division II East Region coaches' ranking, but on Tuesday moved up to No. 7 on the heels of the Jack Saint Clair Memorial results. The Golden Falcons finished second of 13 in that race.

Felician is guided by second-year head coach Elson Smajlaj of North Bergen. Morales, Linares and the Golden Falcons are next in action on Oct. 19 at the St. Joseph's (N.Y.) College Invitational in Kings Park, N.Y.
