WATERBURY, Conn. – The Felician University women's volleyball team suffered non-conference losses eight hours apart on Saturday during Day 1 of the two-day, six-team Eagles Invitational, hosted by Post University at the Drubner Athletic Center.
Felician (1-5) met Southern Connecticut State University in the tournament's first match on Saturday morning, and the Owls emerged victorious, 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-16). The Golden Falcons had to wait through three other matches before returning to face Bloomsburg University and suffering a 3-2 defeat.
The day started auspiciously for Felician. The Golden Falcons won their first eight rallies against Southern Connecticut, three via kills from senior Raamiah Edwards (Bloomfield, N.J.). But the Owls quickly came back to lead Set 1, 16-15, then slowly pulled away. Jennifer Dawson (Clinton, Conn.) put down three consecutive kills to end Set 2 and allow Southern (5-0) to squeak past Felician for a 2-0 lead, and the Owls hit .400 in claiming a lopsided third set.
Senior setter Tea Carter's (Modesto, Calif.) 31 assists and six digs led a balanced Owl offense to a .306 attack percentage. Ella White (Gurnee, Ill.) had 12 kills and Dawson hit .533 with 10 kills. Edwards hit .400 and led all players with 14 kills for Felician. Golden Falcon freshman Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M.) produced team highs of 18 assists and 11 digs.
In the evening, Felician dropped a neutral-site deciding set to Bloomsburg for the second consecutive weekend. This time, the Huskies won 24 of the match's last 32 points, storming back from a 2-0 deficit to win, 18-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-7.
Sophomore Maddie Sloan (West Caldwell, N.J.), who added 13 digs, and junior Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii) blasted 12 kills apiece for Felician. Edwards totaled eight kills, nine digs and five aces, and Martinez finished with five kills, 32 assists and nine digs.
After hitting .310 to win the third set, Bloomsburg (2-4) erased a 19-16 deficit and captured Set 4. Two Shayna Warfel (Lancaster, Pa.) aces helped the Huskies open a 3-1 lead in the deciding set, and consecutive shared blocks by Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa.) and Ashley Adams (Chambersburg, Pa.) stretched the edge to 9-4, a hill which proved insurmountable for the Golden Falcons.
Bloomsburg libero Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa.) accumulated 36 digs and five assists. Teammate Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa.) had a match-high 18 kills.
Felician faces the University of Bridgeport and Saint Anselm College on Sunday to conclude its stay in the Eagles Invitational.
