BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Felician University junior middle blocker Kaleysa Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J.) put down her 100th career block, but the Golden Falcons were defeated by host Bloomfield College, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 26-24) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball action on Friday night at the B.C. Gymnasium.
Vodrazka finished the night with nine kills. Early in the second set, she teamed with junior Jazlyn Pipkins (Paris, Texas) for her milestone block. She is the sixth member of the Golden Falcons' 100-block club; the full list can be viewed at https://twitter.com/FelicianUSports/status/1046157154791624704.
Felician freshman outside hitter Kahea Aea (Mililani, Hawaii) led all players with 13 kills and added 11 digs. Pipkins joined Vodrazka with nine kills. Freshman setter Laityn Sarna (Las Vegas, Nev.) ran a balanced Bloomfield offense, producing 43 assists and helping the Bears hit .186.
The Golden Falcons (5-8, 4-4) broke an 11-11 Set 1 tie to take the lead for good when kills by Pipkins and Aea sandwiched a Bear error. Another Aea kill gave Felician a 20-16 lead. Bloomfield won the next two rallies but Golden Falcon setter Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif.) earned a key point with a second-touch dump for a kill. Leading 24-20, the visitors dropped two potential set points before Aea put the set away with her seventh kill.
Set 2 followed the opposite script. With the teams even, 17-17, Bloomfield, keyed by consecutive Ashley Stroot (Rolesville, N.C.) service aces, won six of the next seven points. Felician saved three set points before a kill by Bloomfield junior Julliet Tygret (Gilbert, Ariz.) knotted the match at one set apiece.
Felician jumped out to a 5-0 Set 3 lead. It was still ahead, 15-11, before the hosts ran off five points in a row to move ahead. The set stayed close thereafter, with the score being tied at 17-17, 20-20, and 22-22. The Golden Falcons held off two set points on kills by Pipkins and Baylei Furman (Kanehoe, Hawaii) to pull even again at 24-24, but Bloomfield claimed the pivotal set on an Felician error and a Danielle Quintanar (El Paso, Texas) ace.
Once again, the hosts won the key points down the stretch of Set 4, which was tied 11 times, to claim the match. With Felician trailing, 24-23, a kill by Vodrazka extended the match. But the visitors committed a service error, opening the door for Destiny King's (Williamstown, N.J.) kill to give the Bears (1-17, 1-6) their first victory of 2018.
Quinatar (12 digs), Tygret (nine digs) and King (four blocks) all had 12 kills to pace Bloomfield. Felician sophomore Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii) totaled seven kills and three blocks.
Felician sees a quick turnaround with an 11 a.m. date with Georgian Court University on Saturday in CACC action in Lakewood, N.J.
