RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University senior opposite hitter Baylei Furman (Kanehoe, Hawaii/Moanalua) came off the bench to record her first NCAA double-double, sparking the Golden Falcons to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-23) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium.
Felician (5-7, 4-3 CACC) has a winning record in conference play after seven matches for the first time in the 14-year history of its program. Overall, the Golden Falcons are off to the second-best start in team history, having begun the 2014 campaign at 5-5.
Furman did not play in Felician's first-set loss on Tuesday. She entered early in Set 2, and ended up producing a Golden Falcon career high of 10 kills with 11 digs. She hit .364 on the night. Furman is in her second year with Felician after transferring from Hartnell College.
Freshman outside hitter Kahea Aea (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamehameha) led the Golden Falcons with 13 kills and 15 digs for her third double-double of 2018. Felician junior middle blocker Jazlyn Pipkins (Paris, Texas/Paris) totaled eight kills and five blocks.
Felician recovered from a 15-10 Set 1 deficit to move ahead, 18-17. A kill by Dominican junior Gabrielle Napoleon (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) ended a four-point spurt by the hosts and evened the score. The teams were still knotted, at 20-20, when a Golden Falcon service error led to the Chargers scoring the set's final five points.
Set 2 turned on an 8-0 Felician run which turned a 9-4 deficit into a three-point lead. Ahead 17-13, the hosts captured another five consecutive rallies to take control.
The Golden Falcons never trailed in the third set. The teams were even as late as 13-13 before Felician exploded for a six-point spurt. Junior Kaleysa Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) put down three kills in the run. The Chargers crept as close as 23-22 before being whistled for a net violation on defense, and Pipkins and Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif./Murrieta Mesa) shared a block to end the set.
An exciting fourth set featured 11 ties and six lead changes. Out of a Felician timeout at 22-22, a kill by Furman was answered by Charger junior Mykalee Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./KAPPA International). Pipkins put down a kill to guide her team to match point, and Furman and Sierra Gallagher (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha) teamed up for a block to secure the 3-1 victory.
Felician setters Greek and Gallagher combined for 35 assists. Dominican (2-13, 2-5) received double-doubles from junior Deanna Knopf (Hauppauge, N.Y.) (11 kills, 11 digs) and freshman Emmalyn LaPier (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) (11 kills, 10 digs)
Felician begins a busy weekend by playing a CACC match at Bloomfield College on Friday night.
