LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Freshman sprinter Aasiyah Alston (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) scored 11 of her team's 23 points in leading Felician University to an eighth place finish out of 11 schools at the 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet, hosted by Georgian Court University on Sunday.
The 23 points were the most Felician, a fourth-year program, has ever scored in the event. It edged ninth place Nyack College by half a point. The Golden Falcons also set six school records.
Alston attained the two best individual results for the Golden Falcons on the day. She placed third out of 24 in the 100-meter dash, missing all-CACC honors by 0.11 seconds. Alston was fifth of 28 entrants in the 200-meter dash.
Alston broke her own Felician records in both events. She completed the 100 meters in 12.80 seconds and the 200 in 26.45 seconds. Her third-place result was worth six points toward the team score, and the fifth place contributed four more. She also ran a leg for the 4x100-meter relay team which also finished fifth.
All but two points of the Golden Falcons' scoring came on the track. The only field-event points for Felician came in the triple jump. Freshman Sierra Epps (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) recorded a school-record jump of 9.64 meters to finish seventh of 11. The previous Golden Falcon mark of 9.57 meters was set by Success Edioma in the 2016 league meet.
Freshman Shahiana Odies (Vauxhall, N.J./Benedictine Academy) took back her Golden Falcon record in the 100-meter hurdles from teammate Neuchatel King (Atco, N.J//Hammonton). Her time of 16.95 seconds placed her sixth of 18 and nabbed her team three points. King was 12th in the event at 18.17.
Felician received two points from senior Kelly Murphy (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (7th/7, 16:31.78) and two more from its 4x400-meter relay team. The quartet of Odies, freshman Kayla Hightower (Norfolk, Va./Camden [N.J.]), and sophomores Jazlyn Pipkins (Paris, Texas/Paris) and Orquidea Maldonado (Newark, N.J./Technology) broke its own program record with a time of 4:31.02 and placed seventh of 10.
Hightower eclipsed her own Felician record in the 400-meter dash. She crossed the finish line in 1:05.16 and placed 11th of 17.
The host Lions won their fifth consecutive CACC Championship with 211 points, 15 better than runner-up Bloomfield College. Georgian Court won six events and garnered 12 all-conference performances.
The Golden Falcons plan to participate in the Georgian Court Last Chance Meet on Friday, May 11. Felician then graduates only three seniors from an active 2018 roster of 18 athletes.
