PHILADELPHIA – The Felician University women's basketball team was defeated by host Chestnut Hill College, 93-54, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
However, due to other CACC results on Saturday, Felician (8-14, 8-7 CACC) has qualified for the conference championship tournament. The Golden Falcons are four games ahead of fifth-place Bloomfield College in the CACC North Division with four to play, and own tiebreaker rights over the Bears.
Felician reaches the CACC playoffs for the second consecutive year, the fifth time in head coach Steve Fagan's 11-year tenure, and for the 11th occasion during the Golden Falcons' 20 years as a CACC member. It will participate in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 5, with opponent and site still to be determined.
Sophomore Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Golden Falcons with 10 points on Saturday. Freshman Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) netted a season-high eight points, and junior Taliyah Brisco (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) also scored eight. Sophomore Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) topped five double-figure scorers for Chestnut Hill (7-15, 5-9) with 15 points and seven assists.
Felician led, 9-2, after 3 ½ minutes of action, but by the end of the first period, the Griffins had pulled ahead, 19-17. CHC then outscored Felician, 21-5, in the second quarter for an 18-point halftime lead.
The Griffins put the game away after halftime. The hosts put up 34 third-quarter points, and by the end of period, had built a 74-34 advantage. CHC led by as many as 45 points down the stretch.
Chestnut Hill amassed a 66-30 rebounding advantage while holding the Golden Falcons to 27-percent shooting from the floor.
Felician hosts Post University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.
