LYNDHURST, N.J. – Senior right fielder Bella Bradian (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) went 6 for 7 and freshman pitcher Martarina Crumb (Branchville, N.J./Sussex Tech) earned a win and a save to lead Felician University to a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Bloomfield College on Tuesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Felician won Game 1, 8-4, before also claiming victory in the day's second game, 11-7.
The Golden Falcons (7-12, 3-1 CACC) were playing their 2019 home openers. Felician amassed a combined 27 base hits on the afternoon. Senior center fielder Steph Donah (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) was 5 for 8 with a home run, five runs scored and three runs batted in.
Freshman third baseman Arlene Flores (Hemet, Calif./West Central Academy) and sophomore first baseman Jerae Keli'ikoa (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Mililani) had two hits in each game for Bloomfield (4-9, 2-2).
Felician appeared to take early control of Game 1 by scoring five times in the bottom of the second inning. Bradian's two-run single jumpstarted the rally, which contained six hits. Bloomfield, however, responded with four runs in the top of the third, capped by a three-run double from Alexis Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y./Islip).
Crumb kept the Bears off the scoreboard for the balance of the contest. She escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the fourth before Felician tacked on a run in the home half on an RBI single by Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif./West Valley). Felician sophomore Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) led off the sixth with a home run, and Bradian later singled home a run for the final margin.
Crumb (2-7) gave up eight hits – four of them in the third inning – and four walks while striking out two Bears. Bradian was 4 for 4 – her first collegiate four-hit game – with three RBI, and four-other Golden Falcons enjoyed multi-hit contests.
In the nightcap, the Golden Falcons broke a 1-1 tie with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The frame began with consecutive home runs by Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and Donah. With two outs, a four-base Bloomfield error caused three runs to come around. After Felician re-set the table, C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) scored on a wild pitch and Spiegelberg sent an RBI double to straightaway center.
Bloomfield pulled to within 8-5 with none out in the fifth after a grand slam home run from sophomore Mariah Wysocki (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional). Crumb came on and allowed just one hit, a two-run Wysocki homer in the seventh, in three innings of relief.
The Golden Falcons had tacked on three runs in the sixth on Donah's two-run single and a bases-loaded walk to Monica Laverty (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst).
Felician freshman hurler Trinity Garcia (West Covina, Calif./West Covina) (5-3) competed through four-plus innings. She yielded 10 hits and three walks, but the Bears turned them into only five runs. Donah paced the offense, going 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBI, while Bradian added two more hits and swiped a pair of bases. Spiegelberg had a double with her home run, and Davis was 2 for 4 and scored twice.
Bloomfield's Wysocki finished 3 for 4 with six RBI. Teammate Sarisha Daugherty (Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop) was also 3 for 4.
Felician steps out of league play for a doubleheader at Mercy College on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
