WATERBURY, Conn. – The Felician University men's soccer team was tied with or ahead of Post University for the first 71 minutes of its eventual 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to the host Eagles on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field.
Post (11-3-3, 8-2-2 CACC) was the 2018 CACC champion. This year's Eagles are ranked No. 9 in the most recent NCAA Division II Super-Region 1 and finished second in the CACC regular-season standings with Tuesday's result.
Felician (3-14, 2-10) was the first team on the scoreboard when redshirt sophomore Leo Yang (Seoul, South Korea) found the net for an unassisted tally in the 31st minute. But the Golden Falcons fell just short of exiting the period with the edge. Post was awarded five corner kicks in the first half and made the final one memorable. When freshman Michele Venditti (Avezzano, Italy) headed home a teammate's kick, just one second remained on the clock.
The Golden Falcons were prevented from attempting another shot after Yang's goal but managed to maintain the deadlock until fewer than 19 minutes remained in regulation time. Moments after a teammate hit a crossbar with a shot, sophomore Francesco Perienelli (Iazisa, Italy) broke the tie. Eagle junior Alvaro Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) scored with 7:41 remaining for the final margin.
Felician remained competitive on the scoreboard despite being out-shot, 20-1, and losing the corner-kick count, 11-0. Golden Falcon freshman goalkeeper Alex Ficarra (Phillipsburg, N.J.) was credited with seven saves.
Felician concludes its 2019 campaign by hosting New York Institute of Technology on Friday at 7 p.m. in Lyndhurst, N.J.
