RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University is ranked No. 7 in the current National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II East Region Poll, according to balloting released today.
Felician (20-16) went 4-2 last week and has won 12 of its last 14 games. The Golden Falcons moved up three spots after occupying the No. 10 position in the April 1 version of the poll. They have a 20-11 record against fellow members of the East, including a 2-2 mark against other teams in the regional top 10.
Felician is one of three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) members to be ranked this week. Wilmington (Del.) University (21-13) is in the No. 5 spot, and Dominican (N.Y.) College (17-14) has been voted ninth. The Golden Falcons play Wilmington, the 2018 CACC champion, four times this week.
Felican has four regulars batting more than .330 and is hitting .298 as a team. Senior second-baseman Danny Healey Jr. (Brookhaven, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) is hitting .383 with a home run, 34 runs scored, 26 runs batted in, and 11 stolen bases. Healey is the CACC co-leader with six triples. Senior shortstop and leadoff man L.T. Struble (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) is batting .377 with two homers and league highs of 41 runs scored and 26 steals, and sophomore outfielder/first baseman Anthony Condito (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) is at .368 with 19 extra-base hits and 30 RBI.
The Golden Falcons also boast of three of the CACC's top five earned-run average leaders. Sophomore right-hander Michael Gutierrez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) owns a 5-3 won-lost record, a 2.36 ERA and a CACC-best 76 strikeouts. Junior righty Alex Schwartz (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) is 3-1 with a 2.85 ERA, and senior lefty Jacob Nappi (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) is at 4-3 and 3.00.
The NCBWA D-II East voting panel is comprised of nine regional sports information directors, three each from the CACC, East Coast Conference, and Northeast 10 Conference. There are 34 baseball-playing schools in the region.
Felician, guided by 16th-year head coach Chris Langan, is 14-4 in CACC play and owns a three-game lead over Chestnut Hill College in the CACC South Division. The Golden Falcons host Wilmington in a noon doubleheader on Tuesday in Lyndhurst, N.J.
