LANTANA, Fla. – The Felician University baseball team began its five-game five-day spring break trip to south Florida with an 11-4 non-conference victory over Queens (N.Y.) College during the Palm Beach Challenge on Tuesday afternoon at the Santaluces Athletics Complex.
Felician (2-6) out-hit the Knights, 17-5, garnering six extra base hits. Golden Falcon graduate left fielder Ronnie Sessa (Chester, N.J.) was 4 for 4. Senior right fielder Jason Aponte (Loxahatchee, Fla.) went 3 for 6 with a double and three runs batted in, and junior designated hitter Jordan Folgers (Moriches, N.Y.) had a double and a home run with three RBI.
The Golden Falcons were the designated home team and jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Aponte lined a two-run single and Folgers followed with a two-run double, both with two outs, in the first. Senior L.T. Struble (Hammonton, N.J.) came up with a two-run second-inning double and later scored on a single by Anthony Condito (Nutley, N.J.).
Felician sophomore right-hander Michael Gutierrez (Garfield, N.J.) was the beneficiary of the early offense. Gutierrez (1-1) worked through five frames, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out six Knights and walked four. The only blemish on his line came on a RBI single by Queens freshman Jon Strauss (Parkland, Fla.) in the bottom of the fifth.
Golden Falcon pitchers issued 10 walks, but the Knights' comeback attempt was thwarted by leaving 15 runners on base. Queens junior Joe O'Rourke (Staten Island, N.Y.) was 3 for 5, including an RBI single during his team's three-run ninth.
Junior transfer Mike Martinez (Union City, N.J.) joined Struble, Condito, and Folgers with two-hit games for Felician. The Knights fell to 2-2-1.
The Golden Falcons play their first doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, traveling to Lakeland to face Florida Southern College at 1 p.m.
