RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Caldwell University pulled away with a late run of points in all three sets to earn a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-17) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over host Felician University on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium. Felician (4-21, 2-16 CACC) was playing its final home match of 2017.
With its win, Caldwell (21-7, 15-3) clinched at least a share of first place in the CACC North Division and the Division's top seed in next week's conference championship tournament.
The Cougars received their usual large statistical output from their senior duo of outside hitter Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha) and middle blocker Katrina Janssen (Seville, Australia/Billanook College). Auyong hit .295 with a match-high 16 kills and eight digs, and Janssen totaled 14 kills and 14 digs. Both players added two service aces.
Junior outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) led Felician with nine kills and added eight digs. Calero became the eighth player in the 14-year history of the Golden Falcon program to surpass 700 career digs (currently 705).
Felician was fighting from behind throughout Set 1, as the Cougars stretched a 9-8 lead to 18-12. Four consecutive Caldwell errors brought the hosts to within 18-15, but after the teams traded kills, the Cougars captured six of the final seven rallies.
The Golden Falcons recovered from a 10-4 second-set deficit, drawing even at 16-16 following a Calero kill and an ace by Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif./Murrieta Mesa). Caldwell won the next three points to take control, and ended up scoring nine of the final 12.
Felician never led in Set 3, but did slice a 10-5 spread to 16-15. A Golden Falcon service error began a streak of three consecutive Caldwell points. After a Greek kill made it 19-16, Felician tallied only one more point for the rest of the night.
Greek finished with four kills, 26 assists and 10 digs from her setter position. Felician received 18 digs and three assists from sophomore libero Lauren Mack (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), while sophomore Jazlyn Pipkins (Paris, Texas/Paris) (four blocks) and freshman Kate Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) produced six kills each.
Caldwell senior Jessica Mitchell (Plainfield, Ill./Neuqua Valley) led all players with 24 digs.
The Golden Falcons conclude the 2017 campaign with a 1 p.m. match on Saturday at Nyack College.
