LYNDHURST, N.J. – A 67th-minute Georgian Court University goal gave the Lions a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory over host Felician University on Saturday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Felician (2-8, 2-6 CACC) had successfully defended 16 corner kicks on the night before Georgian Court converted on its 17th such attempt. For the game, the visitors held a 19-3 edge in corners.
On the eventual game-winning goal, Krystal Hund's (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) kick connected with the body of teammate Anissa Fucci (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township). Fucci redirected the ball toward senior forward Heather Arbachesky (Wall, N.J./Wall Township), who finished up from in front. Twenty-three minutes, 29 seconds, remained in regulation time.
With 19:31 to play, a Lion player was sent off the field on a direct red card. But even with the player advantage, Felician had difficulty penetrating the GCU defense. A shot by senior Sami Lederle (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) in the 79th minute was stopped by Georgian Court junior goalkeeper Natalie Axelsson (Galloway, N.J./Absegami). With fewer than three minutes to go, the hosts could make nothing happen on a last-gasp corner kick.
The Lions (9-3, 8-0) started the game by creating a barrage of corners, but each one was successfully defended by the Golden Falcons, often without any kind of shot opportunity. The teams completed a scoreless first period with GCU leading in corners, 14-2, but in shots only 6-3.
Axelsson earned the shutout with three saves. Felician sophomore keeper Jamie Kazenmayer (Forked River, N.J.) made five saves in 70 minutes.
The Golden Falcons continue a three-game homestand by entertaining Bloomfield College in CACC action on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Lyndhurst.
