RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Women's soccer student-athlete Julia Sheridan (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Community) has been named Felician University's recipient of the 2016 New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Woman of the Year Award.

Sheridan was among the guests of honor at the annual NJAIAW Woman of the Year Luncheon on Sunday, run in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Following this year's luncheon, held at Seton Hall University in South Orange, each college winner was recognized at halftime of the Pirates' women's basketball game against St. John's University.

Award winners are chosen by their institution's athletics department based upon athletic excellence, academic success and citizenship/community service. Approximately 190 high-school and junior and senior college student-athletes earned the award in 2016.

Sheridan, a senior, owns a 3.90 cumulative grade-point average as an accounting major. A three-time Academic All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) honoree, she is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma college athlete honor society and the Sigma Beta Delta business honor society. In her community, Sheridan trains service dogs for Canine Companions for Independence, packages meals for Stop Hunger Now, and is the president of Felician's chapter of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. She is a 2012 graduate of Community High of Teaneck, during which time she was a three-sport standout for Hasbrouck Heights High.

"Julia has placed herself among the elite student-athletes that have attended Felician," said eighth-year Golden Falcon head women's soccer coach Thomas Notte. "She has been a leader on and off the field, and has been a large part of the success of the women's soccer program."

Competitively, Sheridan was a three-year starter at goalkeeper. She is Felician's all-time leader in goals-against average (1.29), led the Golden Falcons to consecutive appearances in the CACC semifinals, and was chosen for the 2014 CACC All-Tournament team.

NGWSD celebrates the athletic achievements of women and the positive well-being associated with sports participation while also recognizing the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. Feb. 6 was the 30th anniversary of the chartering of NGWSD by Congress.
