RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College seniors Alysia Arcona (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) and Joe Petosa (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) have been named the 2013-14 Felician Female and Male Senior Student-Athletes of the Year. Both were honored at the athletics department's annual senior banquet on Monday night at The Fiesta in Wood-Ridge.
The Felician Senior Student-Athletes of the Year are the female and male graduating athletes who, as selected by department administrators, best represent the mission statement of Golden Falcon athletics. Academic performance, athletic contribution, citizenship and leadership both inside and outside of athletics are among the selection criteria.
Arcona, a forward for the women's soccer team, will graduate among Felician's all-time top 10 scorers in both goals (25) and points (69). Her 19 career assists tie her for second place on the Golden Falcons' career list. In 2013, she started all 18 games and logged five goals and two assists. She is Felician's first female two-time Academic All-American in any sport, and has earned on-field All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) honors three times.
Arcona is the treasurer of Felician's chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi educational honor society. In December 2012, she traveled to Assisi, Italy, as a "Franciscan pilgrim" to deepen her understanding of Felician's mission by studying the life of St. Francis. Arcona was the CACC's Student-Athlete of the Month for September 2013 and Felician's 2014 "Woman of the Year" honoree by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. She owns a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in elementary education and English. She is a 2010 graduate of Hackettstown High.
Petosa is only the second Golden Falcon baseball player to earn All-CACC honors four times. This season, he was a First Team selection and is batting .359 with a home run, 24 runs scored and 28 runs batted in during 42 games. He will likely be the clean-up hitter as the Golden Falcons compete in this week's CACC Tournament. Petosa was a Daktronics and NCBWA all-region choice in 2012 before missing last season due to injury.
Petosa was named a 2012 Third-Team Capital One Academic All-American, and is on the ballot again this year. He is the school's all-time leader in triples (19) and walks (88), and one of four members of its 200-hit club. With 214 career hits, he is three shy of the Felician career record. He earned a BS in accounting in 2013 with a grade-point average of 3.79, and is enrolled in Felician's MBA program. Petosa is 2009 graduate of Spotswood High.
Felician President Dr. Anne M. Prisco and the athletics department also honored their 31 senior student-athletes across their 10 intercollegiate NCAA Division II sports at Monday night's banquet.
