RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College seniors Allie Couzo (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) and Rob Albano (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) have been named the 2012-13 Felician Female and Male Senior Student-Athletes of the Year. Both were honored at the athletics department's annual senior banquet on Tuesday night at The Fiesta in Wood-Ridge.
The Felician Senior Student-Athletes of the Year are the female and male graduating athletes who, as selected by department administrators, best represent the mission statement of Golden Falcon athletics. Academic performance, athletic contribution, citizenship and leadership both inside and outside of athletics are among the selection criteria.
Couzo will graduate among the top three all-time women's soccer goalkeepers at Felician in five major statistical categories, including wins, saves, and shutouts. In 2012, she had a 5-9-1 won-lost-tied record, a 1.81 goals-against average and one shutout in helping the Golden Falcons to their fifth consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoff berth. Couzo was an all-CACC selection as a junior and made the CACC all-tournament team in 2009.
Off the field, Couzo is a student in Felician's honors program and is enrolled in an accelerated doctorate joint degree program in physical therapy at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She was the CACC's Student-Athlete of the Month for September 2012 and Felician's 2013 "Woman of the Year" honoree by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. A three-time Academic All-CACC honoree and two-time Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar, Couzo owns a 3.87 cumulative grade-point average. She is a 2009 graduate of Sayreville War Memorial.
Albano is the most successful runner in the 13-year history of the Felician men's cross-country program. He is the first Golden Falcon to make two all-region teams, and the first male in CACC history to win the league's Runner of the Year award twice. In 2012, he won all four regular-season races that he completed, plus the conference meet.
Albano was named a 2012 Third-Team Capital One Academic All-American. He was the No. 1 runner on Felician's CACC championship teams of 2010 and 2011, and was chosen as the CACC Runner of the Week 18 times in his career. He owns every Golden Falcon school record, plus the CACC meet record. Albano maintains a GPA of 3.74 while majoring in elementary education, and is a 2009 graduate of Pequannock Township High.
Felician also honored its 30 senior student-athletes across its 10 intercollegiate NCAA Division II sports at Tuesday night's banquet.
