Catawba Women Jump Ahead Early To Top Felician

SALISBURY, N.C. – Catawba College led, 9-1, after 10 minutes and went on to a 24-1 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over visiting Felician University on Monday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

Sophomore midfielder Christianna Louzan (Manchester, N.J.) scored the Felician goal and added two ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore midfielder Nicole Hunt (Pleasant Garden, N.C.) totaled three goals and three assists to pace Catawba (3-4).

The Indians led, 3-0, after three minutes, 31 seconds, of action. Louzan converted a free-position attempt with 25:55 left in the first period to pull the visitors to within 3-1. But the Golden Falcons (0-3) were held to four shots for the half and did not score again.

Erin Green (Stratford, N.J.) tallied the game's next two goals for a 5-1 Indian edge. With 17:05 to go until the intermission, Catawba forced running time by taking an 11-1 lead. The Indians' Michaela Gerard (Keller, Texas) made a free-position shot with 1:12 to play for a 15-1 halftime advantage.

Catawba needed just 14 shots to record its nine second-half goals.

The Indians collected advantages for the day of 40-4 in shots, 26-11 in ground balls, and 20-7 in draw controls. Sophomore attack Gianna Pezzulo (Henniker, N.H.) had two goals and three assists.

Felician received two ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers from sophomore attack/midfielder Winnie Huang (Parlin, N.J.). Sophomore goalie Qamar Smith (Carteret, N.J.) was credited with eight saves.

Felician remains in North Carolina to take on Brevard College on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
