RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University will complete in the third annual East Coast Conference (ECC) Women's Bowling Championship tournament on Friday through Sunday, March 23-25, 2018. The event will be hosted by Adelphi University at Port Jeff Bowl in Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. Felician is an associate member of the ECC only for the sport of women's bowling.
The tournament's public information webpage can be viewed at http://www.eccsports.org/sports/wbowl/championships/2018/index. A supplemental championship page will be maintained by Adelphi at http://aupanthers.com/sports/2018/3/19/ecc-bowling-championships-2018.aspx.
The ECC has 12 members for women's bowling, up from six in 2016 and nine in 2017. Guided by fourth-year head coach Andrew Toriello, the Golden Falcons finished third in each of the first two conference championship events.
All 12 teams will compete, in two pools of six, in five round-robin five-game Baker matches beginning at 8:25 a.m. on Friday, after which they will be seeded, by total pinfall, into a double-elimination bracket. All double-elimination matches will be contested in a Baker best-of-seven playoff format. The first match of the bracket will take place on Friday at 4 p.m.
Double-elimination play will continue at 8:10 a.m. on Saturday with five more rounds. Four teams will return on Sunday at 8 a.m. for the final three playoff rounds. The winner of the bracket will be crowned the ECC champion. The host Panthers have won each of the first two ECC women's bowling titles.
"I wholeheartedly believe that we have the potential to win this tournament," said Felician senior right-hander Jessica Zalewski (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat). "We will need to execute our shots, stay together, and fill frames."
Felician, in its fourth season as an intercollegiate program, enters the tournament with a won-lost record of 48-55. Zalewski, a 2017 Second-Team All-ECC selection, leads this year's Golden Falcons in traditional game average (185.8) and Baker frame average (17.96). Sophomore righty Nicole Aumack (Brick, N.J./Brick Township), last year's ECC Rookie of the Year, averages 185.2 in traditional games and 17.85 in Baker frames in 2017-18.
Three nationally-ranked teams are in the field – No. 11 Adelphi (70-32), No. 21 Kutztown University (59-37), and No. 23 Lincoln Memorial University (47-40).
Seven members of the Golden Falcons, including Zalewski, have been a part of the program since its inception in 2014.
"This will be the last chance for the seven seniors to prove ourselves," Zalewski said. "We have all worked incredibly hard for the last four years, both on and off the lanes, to ensure a future for this program."
