RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The 2014-15 Felician University women's bowling team was recently named the winner of the 2016 New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Team Academic Award for winter sports.

The Golden Falcons were presented with the award on Sunday at the annual NJAIAW Woman of the Year Luncheon, run in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Seton Hall University hosted the luncheon at the Regan Fieldhouse in South Orange. Felician was represented by head coach Andrew Toriello and sophomore team member Kaitlyn Stapleton (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood Regional).

Felician earned the honor by virtue of accumulating the highest grade-point average of any college women's winter athletics team in New Jersey in the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters. The eight members of the Golden Falcons amassed a team GPA of 3.64 during the award period.

"In the last year and a half, our team has shown me what being a student-athlete is supposed to be about," Toriello said. "They continue to take both sides of that name seriously. They have set the bar high for the future of our program."

Felician competed in its inaugural season of varsity intercollegiate women's bowling in 2014-15, and posted a won-lost record of 44-42. Following the year, seven Golden Falcons were named to the National Tenpin Coaches Association All-Academic Team, and the team finished second among all NCAA women's bowling programs nationally in GPA.

NGWSD celebrates the athletic achievements of women and the positive well-being associated with sports participation while also recognizing the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. Feb. 6 was the 30th anniversary of the chartering of NGWSD by Congress.
