NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Felician College women's basketball player Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) has been named as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of December 2012, the Conference announced Friday.

In the month of December she helped Felician secure victories at Post (68-66), against Wilmington (77-53), and at Bloomfield (60-53). Gisell scored a season-high 12 points on 2-of-3 shooting from behind the arc in the victory over the Wildcats and also contrubuted five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. She currently ranks sixth all-time in assists at Felician.

In addition to her exploits on the court, Peguero has also been involved in her community outside of basketball. In her hometown of Brooklyn, Gisell volunteered her time at the Helping Hands of Williamsburg, Inc., which is a human service organization. The Pre-Physical Therapy major has also participated in community service events such as the "Play for Kay Day" for breast cancer awareness, Felician's annual holiday "Shoot for Hunger" food drive, the Rutherford Mayor's Wellness Kickoff event, walked in the annual Northern New Jersey Walk/Run to Break the Silence of Ovarian Cancer and has served as a Chaperone in the annual Rutherford Ragamuffin Parade.

In the classroom Gisell holds a 3.26 grade point average (gpa) while majoring in Pre-Physical Therapy. In 2012, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education selected Peguero as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar. The award is co-sponsored by the NCAA and focuses on minority student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom and academically. The award additionally recognizes the student-athlete's commitment to community service and community activism.

The CACC Student-Athlete of the Month is awarded from September through May to select student-athletes who excel in athletics, the classroom and the community
