CLERMONT, Fla. – The Felician University softball team could not recover from a pair of early deficits in its non-conference losses to Gannon University, 8-2, and Urbana University, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon at the Legends Way Ballfields. The contests were contested during THE Spring Games, sponsored by PFX Athletics.
Felician senior left fielder Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) went 4 for 6 on the day. Sophomores Jaimie Parisi (Hackensack, N.J.) and Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) picked up three hits each for the Golden Falcons (2-7).
Felician was the designated home team in its first game of the day, against Gannon. The Golden Knights immediately jumped on top, plating four unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio) capped the rally with a two-run double.
Gannon junior pitcher Keilyn Perich (Venetia, Pa.) (1-0) kept the Golden Falcons off the scoreboard through five frames. The Golden Knights increased their lead to 8-0 with a pair in the sixth, but Felician scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to extend the game. A sacrifice fly by Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) followed by Spiegelberg's RBI single pulled Felician to within 8-2.
Perich, however, worked around a two-out single to retire the Golden Falcons in the seventh. In seven innings, she gave up seven hits, struckout six batters, and walked two. She also scored twice as Gannon's leadoff hitter. Senior Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario) (2 RBI) had three hits apiece for the Golden Knights (5-6).
Roldan went 2 for 3 with a double and Spiegelberg was also 2 for 3 for Felician.
A similar pattern unfolded later Saturday afternoon, as Urbana (1-5), the designated home team, was ahead, 7-2 after two innings. After a Donah sacrifice fly put Felician on top by a run, the Blue Knights used three hits and three walks to bring home three runs in the bottom of the first. Felician freshman C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif.) drew a bases loaded walk in the second to make it 3-2, but the Golden Falcons left the bases loaded, and Urbana needed just one hit to plate four second-inning runs.
With two on and one out in the fifth, Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif.) drove a run-scoring double and Victoria Quercia (Monroe Township, N.J.) followed with an RBI single to cut Urbana's lead to 7-4. But Jade Laviolette (Northwood, Ohio), the last of three Blue Knight pitchers, shut the door after that. Laviolette (1-1) was credited with the victory after tossing 2 2/3 innings of shutout, one-hit relief.
Urbana's Allison Neeld (St. Paris, Ohio) had an RBI double in the sixth for the final margin, the only extra-base hit for the Blue Knights. Felician owned an 8-6 advantage in hits.
The Golden Falcons left 10 runners on base. Parisi was 2 for 2 plus two walks, and Roldan went 2 for 3 with a double. Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) pitched five innings of one-run, two-hit relief after throwing a complete game versus Gannon.
Felician has Sunday off before competing twice Monday in Clermont, against nationally-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan College at 9 a.m. and versus Minnesota State University-Moorhead at 2 p.m.
