Brackett Named CACC Softball Rookie Of The Year; Owens Voted All-Conference

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University freshman Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) has been named the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Rookie of the Year, according to balloting released today. Also, Felician sophomore Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) was elected to the All-CACC Second Team. The conference's all-league teams and award winners were voted upon by its 14 head coaches.

Brackett, a 5-foot-6 shortstop, is the first Golden Falcon to ever be named CACC Rookie of the Year in softball. She has started all 46 games, and is batting .403 with 19 extra-base hits, including three home runs, 35 runs scored, 19 runs batted in, and 14 stolen bases. Brackett leads the CACC in triples (8), is second in hits (62) and steals, and third in batting average.

"Zeaenna has worked extremely hard from day one, and is very deserving of this award," said Felician third-year head coach Chris Foye. "She has made plays both offensively and defensively that have no doubt won us games. She has  been a pleasure to coach, and I look forward to three more great years from her."

Brackett's totals for base hits and triples are Felician single-season records.

Owens, a 5-foot-7 pitcher, appeared in 26 games, starting 21. She has a 10-13 record, a 2.27 earned-run average, one save, and 19 complete games, including two shutouts. She ranks second in the CACC in innings pitched. In 148 innings, she has struck out 79 batters, while walking 29. In conference games, Owens was 9-8 with a 1.97 ERA.

"Ashley has been an absolute workhorse for us in the circle," Foye said. "She has stepped up when we needed her the most, especially these last two weeks to get us into the playoffs. I always know that when I give her the ball, I am going to get a great effort. She has become a true leader on our team."

Felician (17-29, 10-16) is the No. 8 seed for this week's CACC Tournament. On Thursday, the Golden Falcons take on No. 1 seed Caldwell University in first-round action of the double-elimination event at 10 a.m. in Lakewood, N.J.

Felician has now had four student-athletes earn all-conference honors this academic year.
