RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College softball team has launched a blue-ribbon campaign to honor the four members of the softball squad from North Central Texas College (NCTC) who died in a traffic accident during team travel over the weekend.
In memory of the deceased players, members of the Golden Falcons will wear pin-on blue ribbons for one week, culminating with their fall doubleheader at William Paterson University on Oct. 5.
Furthermore, the Golden Falcons are requesting two favors from all of their fellow student-athletes in Felician's 13 varsity sports – to wear a blue ribbon on campus and during practice and competition this week, and to donate $1 per ribbon, which will in turn be sent to a fund supporting the families of the deceased.
"This could have been any of us at Felician – any of our athletes or any member of our staff," said Golden Falcon senior softball student-athlete Chelsea DeGuzman (Clermont, Fla./South Lake). "Seeing that it happened to a college softball team, it hit home with us. We may play for different schools, in different conferences, and even in a different division, but as college athletes we are one big family and we need to unite to support some of our own."
According to media reports, NCTC was returning to its Gainesville, Texas, campus late Friday after playing a fall game at Southern Nazarene University when a semi-truck crossed a median and crashed into its bus near Davis, Okla. Four team members – sophomores Brook Deckard, Jaiden Pelton, and Megan Richardson and freshman Katelynn Woodlee – were killed. Another 12 individuals suffered injuries.
