Leardo Qualifies For N.J. Amateur

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Former Felician College golfer Joe Leardo (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) qualified for the 2011 New Jersey State Golf Association (NJSGA) Amateur Championship, winning his qualifier in late May.

Representing Hendricks Field Golf Club in Belleville, Leardo, 22, attended the second of three one-day sectional qualifiers, at White Beeches Golf & Country Club in Haworth on May 23. Needing to finish in the top 20 to qualify for the state Amateur Championship, he shot a one-under par 71 and was the individual medalist.

Leardo competed in his first NJSGA Amateur on June 7-9, missing the cut after shooting 91-76 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

"For the first time trying to qualify for the New Jersey Amateur Championship, I am very pleased," Leardo said. "I am a little disappointed I missed the cut but I am just happy I made it there."

Leardo recently completed a four-year playing career for Felician in which he was the most successful golfer in the six-year history of the Golden Falcon program. He qualified for the NCAA Division II East Regionals in both his junior and senior seasons, finishing 28th out of 110 at regionals in 2011. He averaged a school-record 77.4 as a junior and had a 79.3 scoring average in 2010-11. He expects a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2012.

Leardo is a 2007 graduate of Belleville High and a former Essex County champion.

"In terms of my accomplishments for my golf career, this is high up on my list," Leardo said. "My biggest accomplishment so far is making it to the (NCAA) regional tournament two years in a row and shooting a one-under par 71 in the first round at this year's regional."
