AMHERST, N.Y. – The Felician University men's basketball team was outscored, 28-9, over the final eight minutes of its 75-56 non-conference loss to Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium. The game began the second and final day of play of the four-team East Coast Conference-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Challenge presented by WNY Knee & Orthopedic Surgery PC, hosted by Daemen College.
Felician senior guard Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del.) led all players with 20 points and added six rebounds. Roberts Wesleyan was paced by 17 points in 22 minutes off the bench from junior guard Justin Vaughn (Raleigh, N.C.). Both Stanford and Vaughn were named to the all-tournament team.
The Redhawks doubled their 30-27 halftime edge on Manny Joseph's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) three-point field goal on the first possession of period two. Six minutes of game time later, Roberts held on to that same margin.
But a Stanford three-pointer jump-started a quick 9-0 run for the Golden Falcons. The stretch was punctuated by a dunk from junior Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.), putting Felican ahead, 43-40, with 10:30 to play. Roberts responded with a three-point play from Vaughn to even the score, and the teams twice traded buckets, leaving the game knotted, 47-47, with 8:17 remaining.
The Redhawks then went on the decisive run of the game, a 15-3 stretch for a 12-point advantage at the 4:58 mark. Vaughn tallied seven points and Joseph six in the spurt. Stanford canned a three-pointer with 4:10 to play to make it 62-53, but Roberts stayed hot, with the final 19-point margin its largest of the day.
Felician shot 29 percent from the floor, including 5 for 18 from three-point range. The Golden Falcons allowed the Redhawks to shoot at a 44-percent clip, including 52 percent after halftime. Junior Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J.) posted 14 points and six rebounds for Felician (0-2).
Roberts (2-0) received 16 points from all-tournament selection Michael Bush (Harlem, N.Y.), while Joseph netted 15. The Redhawks blocked eight Felician shots.
The Redhawks scored the game's first nine points. Felican recovered to take a 17-14 lead before Roberts, following four ties and six lead changes, carried the 30-27 edge into halftime.
