Diesel Selected First Team Academic All-America

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University student-athlete Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) has been voted to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II Baseball First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Diesel, a senior outfielder, becomes the first student-athlete in the 22-year history of Felician athletics to be selected as both an All-American and an Academic All-American. The 6-foot, 195-pounder is the 10th different Golden Falcon to earn Academic All-America® honors, and the University's 14th overall selection.

Diesel, however, is only Felician's third First-Team Academic All-America®, joining women's basketball standout Janelle Biamonte in 2010 and highly-decorated cross-country runner Mike Secreti last year. A complete list can be viewed at www.felicianathletics.com/information/Ac-A-A

"It is truly an honor to win this award," Diesel said. "I pride myself as a true student-athlete, and have always strived to work just as hard in the classroom as I do on the field."

Diesel finished sixth nationally in Division II with a .435 batting average, and slugged .700 with a .500 on-base percentage, despite Felician using wood bats in conference games. In 55 overall contests, he set single-season Golden Falcon records for hits (87), doubles (25), and runs batted in (65) to go along with eight triples, four home runs, and 51 runs scored.

The Golden Falcons posted a 119-88 (.575) record during Diesel's career, including 72-22 (.766) in CACC play. He is a three-time All-CACC and two-time all-region selection, and was the CACC and East Region Player of the Year in 2018.

A three-time member of the CACC All-Academic Team, Diesel is a two-time selection to the Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. He is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma College Athlete Honor Society.

Diesel, Felician's co-Senior Male Student-Athlete of the Year, finished his undergraduate degree requirements last December with a 3.71 GPA as an accounting major. He is pursuing an MBA from Felician. He is a 2014 graduate of Massapequa (N.Y.) High.

"From a young age, my parents told me to put my education first among my priorities," Diesel said. "I have them to thank for instilling in me the importance of doing well in the classroom."

The Division II Google Cloud Academic All America® program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 Division II Academic All-America® teams.
