RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University placed three players on all three recognized 2018 NCAA Division II All-East Region baseball teams, according to balloting released throughout the last week.
Two Felician players – senior outfielder Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and senior third-baseman Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) -- were consensus First Team selections. Both received top honors from National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on May 16, the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) on May 18, and the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday. The D2CCA program is coordinated by the College Sports Information Directors of America, while the ABCA squads are presented by Rawlings Sports.
A third Golden Falcon – junior infielder L.T. Struble (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) was voted to all three teams at three different statuses. Details can be viewed in the chart below.
Felician (30-25) won the regular-season championship of the newly-created CACC South Division with a 25-7 league record. It was the third consecutive regular-season conference or division title for the Golden Falcons, and the fifth in program history. The Golden Falcons were the runners-up in the CACC Championship tournament, and enjoyed the program's third consecutive 30+ win season (and fourth all-time).
"These three guys really carried the load offensively for us," said Felician head coach Chris Langan. "As we recovered from a 2-14 start to win our division, we began to feed off of their approaches at the plate. We as coaches tried to preach team baseball and team at-bats, and Matt, Bruce and L.T. led the way."
Langan has now coached 30 all-region performers in his 15-year Felician career.
Diesel is an all-region selection for the second time; he was also a consensus First Team choice in 2016. This year, he hit .435 (6th nationally in Division II) and slugged .700 with a .500 on-base percentage. In 55 games, he set single season school records for hits (87), doubles (25), and runs batted in (65) to go along with eight triples, four home runs, and 51 runs scored.
Strickland joins former teammate Brennan Price as the only three-time all-region honorees in the 19-year history of Felician baseball. He qualifies at a third different position after being elected at utility-non pitcher in 2015 and at shortstop last year. Strickland, a first-time First-Teamer, batted .373, matched Diesel's record of 25 doubles, scored 58 runs and drove in 43 during 54 contests. He is the Golden Falcons' career leader in games (203), hits (264) and runs scored (175).
Struble was in his first year with the Golden Falcons, having played two seasons for Camden County College before sitting out last year while attending Division I Coastal Carolina University. He was a First Team choice by the D2CCA after splitting time between second base and shortstop. Struble hit .377 with a .473 on-base percentage from the No. 2 slot in the line-up. He scored a program record 64 runs and stole 28 bases while committing only eight errors.
All members of each First Team advance to the national ballot for the respective organization's All-America squads.
The NCAA Division II East Region consists of the CACC, East Coast Conference, and Northeast 10 Conference, totaling 34 baseball-playing institutions.
