RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University is ranked No. 2 in the current National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II East Region Poll, according to balloting released today.
Felician (20-7) went 2-0 last week, and saw four additional games postponed for weather-related reasons. The Golden Falcons occupy the No. 2 position in the poll for the third consecutive week. They have a 17-5 record against fellow members of the East, including a 4-1 mark against other teams in the regional top 10.
Felician is one of two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) members to be ranked this week. Wilmington (Del.) University (18-12) is in the No. 7 spot. Chestnut Hill College (14-9-1) received votes.
Felician was ranked No. 19 in last week's NCBWA national Division II poll. The next version will be released late Tuesday, the same day the Golden Falcons face St. Thomas Aquinas College (20-10), the No. 4 team in the East, in Pomona, N.Y.
Felician has six regulars batting over .300, and is hitting a CACC-best .311 as a team. Senior outfielder Ronnie Grant (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) is hitting .378 and slugging .671 with three home runs, 24 runs scored and 18 runs batted in. Junior shortstop and leadoff man Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) is batting .378 with 16 extra-base hits, 33 runs and 20 RBI, and senior outfielder Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) is at .377 with a homer and 25 RBI.
Senior right-hander John Holland (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) is 4-0 with a CACC-leading 0.86 earned-run average and 32 strikeouts to pace the pitching staff. Sophomore righty Quinn Taylor (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) is 2-0 and has a 0.66 ERA in 12 relief appearances.
The NCBWA D-II East voting panel is comprised of nine regional sports information directors, three each from the CACC, East Coast Conference, and Northeast 10 Conference. There are 33 baseball-playing schools in the region.
Felician, guided by 14th-year head coach Chris Langan of Hazlet, is 11-1 in CACC play.
