Felician Places Record Seven Players On Various All-Region Baseball Teams

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University baseball team set a program record by placing seven players on at least one of the three recognized all-region teams in 2016. Junior catcher Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) and junior outfielder Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) headlined the group by being named consensus First Team selections.

Kleinstein and LaMura were chosen to the NCAA Division II East Region First Team of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the Division II Conference Commissioners' Association (D2CCA), administered by the region's sports information directors, and the American Baseball Coaches Assocation (ABCA), presented by Rawlings. A complete list of honorees from all three bodies is in the chart below.

Felician set program records for wins and winning percentage with a won-lost record of 34-21 (.618). The Golden Falcons won both the regular-season and tournament championships of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), and advanced to their second NCAA East Regional Tournament.

Kleinstein played in 46 games, starting 38. He batted .381 (third in the CACC) with a .447 on-base percentage. He collected a home run, 21 runs scored and 27 runs batted in. He threw out 10 would-be base stealers and picked off five others.

LaMura started all 55 games for the Golden Falcons, 29 in right field and 26 in center field. He set Felician single-season records for at-bats (229) and hits (79), batting .345 with 24 extra-base hits, including eight home runs, 48 runs and 55 RBI. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the CACC Tournament.

Junior pitcher Matt Blandino (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) and sophomore pitcher/first baseman Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) were named to a pair of first-teams. Blandino, the CACC Pitcher of the Year, was a D2CCA and NCBWA First-Team selection and an ABCA Secont-Team honoree after setting Felician single-season records for innings (100 2/3), starts (14) and strikeouts (97). He finished 9-4 with a 2.32 earned-run average, two shutouts, and an opponent batting average of .208.

Polgano was elected First Team by the D2CCA and ABCA at the utility-pitcher spot. He started 34 games at first base, nine in right field, two in left field, and 10 at pitcher/designated hitter, and finished fifth in the CACC in both batting average (.347) and ERA (2.70). Offensively, he had 30 extra-base hits, including seven home runs, 50 runs scored and 35 RBI. On the mound, he went 7-2 with two shutouts and a .216 opponent batting average, striking out 53 batters and allowing 53 hits in 66 2/3 frames.

Sophomore left fielder Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) was chosen to the First Team by the ABCA and the Second Team by the other two bodies. One of five Felician regulars to bat over .340, Diesel hit .341 in 55 starts with 14 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 49 runs scored and 43 RBI.

Junior designated hitter Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (.346, 15 doubles, two homers, 25 runs, 37 RBI, .447 OBP) is Felician's only repeat honoree, having been chosen as the NCBWA's second-team first-baseman in 2015. This year, he was the ABCA's first-team choice at DH, a second-team selection of the D2CCA, and an NCBWA honorable-mention electee.

Sophomore Danny Naif (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) was the NCBWA honorable-mention relief pitcher after going 2-0 with a CACC-leading and Felician-record 10 saves.

All members of each First Team advance to the national ballot for the respective organization's All-America squad.

The NCAA Division II East Region consists of the CACC, East Coast Conference and Northeast-10 Conference, totaling 33 schools.
