LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University baseball team matched a school record with its seventh consecutive victory on Tuesday afternoon, earning a 13-4 non-conference triumph over visiting Dowling College at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Felician put up 17 base hits on the day, and seven of the Golden Falcons' nine offensive starters enjoyed multi-hit games. Senior Ralph Caccavale (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs batted in, and sophomore teammates Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) and Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) drove in three runs apiece.
Junior right-hander JanCarlos Brito (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) (1-0) was credited with the victory after pitching two innings of scoreless relief. Four Felician relievers combined to allow one run on four hits over six frames.
The Golden Falcons (12-13) erased a 3-0 deficit by scoring five times in the bottom of the third inning. After Caccavale's run-scoring double, Diesel tied the game with a two-run single. Two batters later, Felician took the lead for good on an RBI groundout by Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), and another run scored on the play on a Dowling throwing error.
Brito and freshman Matt Downey (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) kept the Golden Lions off the scoreboard in the middle innings, and the Golden Falcons broke the game open late. After Strickland's two-run triple in the sixth made the score 7-3, Felican plated six runs on seven hits in the seventh. Junior catcher Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) highlighted the rally with a two-run single.
Junior second baseman Rob Costanzo (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) was 3 for 3 and scored twice for Dowling (6-12).
