RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College student-athletes Scott De Jong (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) and Joe Petosa (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) were named to the all-tournament team of the 2014 NCAA Division II East Regional Baseball Championship, held May 15-18 on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University. The All-Tournament Team was announced at the conclusion of Sunday's championship round at Penmen Field.
Felician earned the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's automatic qualifier to the Regional after capturing its first CACC championship the previous weekend. Entering as the No. 6 seed, the Golden Falcons lost to the top seed and host Penmen, 9-3 on Thursday before bouncing back to defeat defending champion Franklin Pierce University, 5-0, on Friday. Felician then bowed out of the tournament in fourth place with an 8-5 Saturday afternoon loss to eventual winner St. Thomas Aquinas College.
De Jong, a sophomore first-baseman, went 5 for 11 (.455) with a 1.091 slugging percentage in the event. He hit a pair of two-run home runs in the victory over Franklin Pierce, and added three hits the next day against STAC. For the tournament, he struck out only once in 13 plate appearances, and handled 24 errorless defensive chances.
De Jong led the region in 2014 with 51 runs batted in. He has also been named to the All-CACC First Team, the CACC All-Tournament Team, and the NCBWA and Rawlings/ABCA All-Region First Teams. He is a 2011 graduate of Eastern Christian High.
Petosa was 5 for 13 (.385) with a stolen base for the weekend, extending his school career record for base hits to 225. He was 3 for 4 in the first-round loss to nationally-ranked SNHU. He graduated from Spotswood High in 2009.
Petosa, a graduate student and outfielder, is also highly decorated in 2014. He was selected the Most Valuable Player of the CACC Tournament, and voted to the All-CACC First Team and the Daktronics and ABCA All-Region First Teams. He was a 2012 Capital One Academic All-American and is on this year's ballot.
Under the guidance of 11th-year head coach Chris Langan of Hazlet, Felician set school records for wins and winning percentage in 2014, posting a won-lost record of 30-20 (.600).
