Record Nine Golden Falcons Named All-CACC In Baseball

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The 2014 Felician College baseball team had a program-record nine players attain all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference status, according to balloting released on Tuesday. The Golden Falcons placed four players on the all-CACC First Team, four on the Second Team, and one on the Honorable Mention squad.

The CACC's all-conference teams and special award winners were voted upon by its 14 head coaches. Winners will be formally honored at the annual CACC Baseball Awards Banquet to be held Wednesday night on the campus of Wilmington (Del.) University.

Felician completed the 2014 regular season with a won-lost record of 26-18, and placed second in the CACC with a 15-5 league mark. Eleventh-year head coach Chris Langan and the Golden Falcons are the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament that begins on Thursday morning in New Castle, Del.

Golden Falcons elected to the First Team were senior shortstop Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard), sophomore first-baseman Scott De Jong (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian), senior outfielder Joe Petosa (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) and junior pitcher Jerry Vasto (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional). Brill was also voted the 2014 CACC Player of the Year and Vasto the CACC Pitcher of the Year (see separate release).

Brill is hitting .374 with a home run, 39 runs scored, 31 runs batted in, and 12 stolen bases in 44 games. He leads the CACC in hits (67), triples (school-record 11), and slugging percentage (.570). Vasto has posted a 6-2 record with one save and an earned-run average of 1.46. He has an opponent batting average of .202, and ranks second in the CACC in both ERA and strikeouts (68 in 61 2/3 innings).

De Jong sits atop the NCAA Division II East Region with 45 RBI, and also leads the CACC in walks (28) and sacrifice flies (6). He is batting .359 with five home runs, 38 runs and 10 steals. Petosa becomes the second player in the 15-year history of the Felician program to be named all-CACC four times, joining Mike Rooth (2003-06). He is hitting .359 with a home run, 24 runs, and 28 RBI.

Position players on the Second Team for Felician are senior outfielder Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) (.309, 37 R, 15 RBI, 12 SB) and freshman designated hitter Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (.241, 1 HR, 13 R, 28 RBI). The Golden Falcons also saw pitchers Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and fellow junior Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) elected to the Second Team and sophomore hurler John Holland (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) named Honorable Mention.

Fowler and Facendo are both second-time honorees. Fowler is 7-2 with a 2.37 ERA, 65 strikeouts, and an opponent batting average of .233. Facendo was elected to the relief pitcher spot after going 3-1 with two saves, a 1.77 ERA and a .197 opponent average in 35 2/3 innings over 18 appearances (one start). Holland is 4-5 with two complete games, plus three saves, and an ERA of 2.78.

Felician ranks second in the CACC in both team batting average (.296) and team ERA (2.90).

Felician finishes the 2013-14 academic year with 16 all-conference athletes.
