RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College junior Jerry Vasto (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) was chosen as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending Apr. 20, the CACC announced on Monday.
Vasto was honored on the strength of his nine-inning, three-hit shutout over nationally-ranked Wilmington (Del.) University on Apr. 14. In the first game of a CACC doubleheader, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound left-hander did not walk or hit a batter in a 2-0 Golden Falcon victory, and did not allow a runner past first base. It was his first collegiate complete-game shutout.
Vasto has appeared in 10 games this season, starting eight. He is 4-2 with an earned-run average of 1.85. In 48 2/3 innings, he has yielded 41 hits, struck out 48 batters, and walked 22. He ranks fourth in the CACC in both ERA and strikeouts. Vasto is a 2010 graduate of Henry Hudson Regional of Highlands.
Vasto is the second consecutive Golden Falcon to be named CACC Pitcher of the Week. Senior right-hander Stephen Paladino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) was the Apr. 14 winner.
More information is available at http://www.caccathletics.org/sports/bsb/2013-14/releases/20140421-Baseball-report.pdf. Also on Monday, Golden Falcon junior softball third-baseman Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) was chosen to that sport's CACC Weekly Honor Roll.
Felician (19-15, 11-5 CACC), guided by 11th-year head coach Chris Langan of Hazlet, is ranked No. 9 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers poll. The Golden Falcons sit in third place in the CACC, and next compete tonight when they host Molloy College in non-conference action at 7:30 p.m. at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
