RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College freshman Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) has been named the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division II/III Rookie Pitcher of the Week, the NJCBA announced today. Facendo earned the honor for the third time this season.
Facendo, a 6-foot-4 right-handed reliever, made two scoreless appearances last week for Felician. He allowed two hits, struck out four batters and walked none in two innings of work. On May 2 in a home Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Concordia (N.Y.) College, he tied a Golden Falcon record with his seventh save of the season.
For the year, Facendo has appeared in 19 games (T-5th in the CACC) for the Golden Falcons. He is 1-0 with a 1.96 earned-run average, and ranks second in the CACC in saves. In 23 innings, he has give up 20 hits, struck out 33 batters, and walked six. Facendo is a 2010 graduate of Raritan High.
Felician has captured the NJCBA D-II/III Rookie Pitcher of the Week honor in five of the 10 weeks it has been handed out this season. In addition to Facendo's three awards, fellow freshman right-hander Chet Godfrey (Millville, NJ/Millville) has won it twice.
Felician is a member of NCAA Division II. The Golden Falcons (25-22, 16-4) won the CACC regular-season championship, and begin conference playoff action on Thursday at noon against Bloomfield College in New Castle, Del.
Facendo was also chosen to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll on Tuesday.
