SAAC Continues Charitable Work

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee continued its works of charity in February, with its members donating time to assist and raise funds for children in need.

The SAAC members progressed toward their year-long goal to raise $2,000 for the official NCAA Division II charity, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. In addition, many Golden Falcon student-athletes woke up early on Thu., Feb. 16, to assist some special children closer to home.

The Tomorrow’s Children Fund is dedicated to easing the pain and speeding the healing of children with cancer and serious blood disorders. Feb. 16 was TCF’s Second Annual “Tricky Tray” fundraiser at the Westmount Country Club in Woodland Park. Felician’s SAAC volunteered to load a moving truck with donated toys which were being kept at Hackensack University Medical Center, accompany the truck to Westmount CC, and unload it.

“The toys were being auctioned off to raise money for TCF at the Tricky Tray banquet that night,” said Ivan Lewis, staff coordinator of Felician’s SAAC. “And let me tell you, there were a lot of toys. It was a very large truck that we filled and unloaded. It was very Franciscan work that our student-athletes were doing that fits in well with the mission of our College.”

In support of Make-A-Wish, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions, the SAAC took advantage of a Golden Falcons women-men basketball doubleheader that happened to fall on Valentine’s Day. Message-Grams, in which an audience member could send a message to someone else in attendance via the public address announcer, were sold for a $1 donation to Make-A-Wish.

The idea proved popular. Between the Message-Grams, and raffles held at all of the February home basketball games, the SAAC raised $350. It has now made $950 for Make-A-Wish this academic year, nearly halfway toward its goal.
